Imagine feeling like your mind is collapsing and every thought you have is a fear that feels like it's about to happen to you right now. Physically you overheat, you feel your heart thumping against your chest, you can't breathe and are out of control.
Anxiety can be crushing and at times completely overwhelming. There is however an antidote I find works best for me. Forcing yourself out of the door dressed in a questionable bright blue top with fluorescent yellow runners on it and heading out with friends for a run.
Last Autumn was a tough time but my salvation came in the form of an Ossy Jogger sized family. Even though I can't always get to group runs having the support via the Facebook group and seeing other inspirational stories really motivates me to get out and run.
So what is it about running that wipes the mind clean? It's hard to explain and I'm sure there's some scientific explanation (there absolutely is a scientific explanation but I've never been good at science) but for me it feels like little air bubbles being released as you run. Straight out of your brain through your ears. You can process the nonsense, realise it is nonsense and then properly have a clear out of your mind as you run. Afterwards there's the accomplishment of completing a run but also a feeling of calm that sweeps over you that when you experience the above head mess is priceless.
It's just a massive bonus that I get to share my running with a supportive and friendly bunch of OJ's. Running and talking doesn't have to be you giving anyone your life story (although you'll always find a welcoming ear) but it's the little things that matter. Chatting through family issues with Liz whilst slogging up Dill Hall Lane or Marks ever caring and genuine questioning of how you are just 2 of many examples that spring to mind but there are hundreds of individual moments that happen every week at OJ's when you run and talk. Enjoy run and talk week, get out of the door and attend a run; it really can make all the difference.
