Couch to 5K – A Supportive Beginner Running Programme

Couch to 5K – A Supportive Beginner Running Programme

Our Couch to 5K programme is designed for anyone who is new to running, returning after a break, or feeling unsure about joining a regular running group. It offers a friendly, supportive way to start running with others, focusing on confidence, enjoyment, and gradual progress rather than pace or performance.

The programme follows a structured walk‑to‑run approach, using a mix of walking and running to help you build fitness safely and at a pace that feels right for you. Sessions are led by accredited run leaders who explain everything clearly, offer encouragement throughout, and make sure everyone feels comfortable and supported.

There is no pressure to keep up, no expectation to run continuously at the start, and walking is always encouraged. Everyone progresses at their own pace, and no one is left behind. The aim isn’t just to reach 5K, but to help you feel confident running with others and enjoying being active as part of a group.

Who is this for?

This programme is ideal if you:

  • Are new to running or haven’t run for a while
  • Feel nervous about pace or keeping up
  • Want structured support and encouragement
  • Would like a gentle introduction before joining social runs

You don’t need to be fast, fit, or experienced — just willing to give it a go.

What to expect

  • Supportive, friendly sessions led by qualified run leaders
  • A gradual walk‑run structure
  • Clear explanations and encouragement
  • Regular opportunities to regroup
  • A welcoming environment where questions and pauses are always okay

Pace and ability

Pace guidance shown on ClubSpark is only an estimate. Couch to 5K sessions are not pace‑based. We run using time and effort, with planned walking breaks, so the group stays together throughout. If you’re unsure whether it’s right for you, please come along anyway or contact us — we’re always happy to help.

Venue

Sessions meet at The Venue car park, which provides a convenient and easy‑to‑find meeting point. From there, we follow varied local routes chosen to suit the session and keep the group together in a safe, supportive way.

What happens next?

When you complete Couch to 5K, you’ll be encouraged and supported to move into our Social Thursday runs, which remain relaxed, friendly, and conversational. For those who want to progress further, our Structured Tuesday sessions offer guided training in the same welcoming environment.

If you’re feeling unsure or nervous, that’s completely normal — many of our runners felt the same way when they started. Please come along, give it a try, and see how it feels.
