How it started

Run York was formed in 2008 by Richard Smith, as part of a new initiative by England Athletics called Jog England.

It was important to ease as many barriers to participation as possible, so the group should be free of charge, non-competitive and with encouragement rather than pressure. Each person should be able progress at their own pace, towards whatever goal they seek to achieve.

Run York settled on meeting every Monday evening at the Marriott Hotel (since 2024 this Monday group has met at the Holiday Inn). In 2010 Trish Bell established a second group, meeting every Thursday evening at the Millennium Bridge. Later on Lynne Ackroyd and Jayne Batt formed Heworth Harriers meeting every Tuesday evening at Heworth Tennis club.

All the groups share the same ethos and are led by qualified Run Leaders.

As runners progressed and gained confidence, their individual goals also evolved. Many were happy to enjoy the relaxed and friendly social runs while others looked to try longer distances.

A natural progression was to form a partnership with Sweat Equity, a group started by Janet Wood in 2006 which offered training programs for longer distances.

In 2014 Trish Bell was voted ‘Volunteer of the Year’ at the Active York Sports Awards and, in 2017, Richard Smith also received the same award.

Inspired by their example and dedication the groups continue to thrive and help others get started and enjoy their running.
