Stuart Sahan, Group Leader from Longford Striders, attended the recent RunTogether Group Leader Development Day held at the iconic Alexander Stadium, a venue rich in athletics history and now the home of England’s national track and field programme.
The event brought together RunTogether leaders from across the region for a full day of learning, collaboration and practical skill development. Attendees heard from a range of excellent speakers, covering topics that are increasingly important for inclusive and community-focused running groups.
One session explored how small, thoughtful adjustments can make group runs more accessible for people living with Parkinson’s, helping leaders better understand the condition and how to support runners with varied needs. Another talk highlighted the significant mental and physical benefits of getting outdoors and connecting with nature, a reminder of the powerful role that running groups can play in overall wellbeing.
A standout moment came from Sam Barlow, founder of Fitmums & Friends and BBC Unsung Hero Sports Personality of the Year 2021. She shared the inspiring story behind the organisation and how community-based running and fitness groups can transform lives far beyond the athletics track.
The day also included a practical resistance band workshop which proved especially useful. Several new training ideas emerged that will no doubt make their way into future Longford Striders sessions.
For Stuart, visiting Alexander Stadium also brought back memories, having completed his Leadership in Running Fitness course there around ten years ago when access to the track was not allowed. Being able to take a lap this time added a nice personal touch to the day.
And for anyone wondering about his absence from Saturday morning’s group run, there was no lie-in involved. It was simply an early start to make the most of a worthwhile and highly engaging event.
A big thank you to RunTogether and all the speakers for delivering a day packed with insight, inspiration and practical takeaways. Longford Striders look forward to putting the learning into action in the weeks ahead.
