Frequently Asked Questions
Here's everything you need to know before joining Newburn Running Club...
1.) When do you train?
We train every Tuesday and Thursday evening, with our warm-ups starting at 7:10pm and sessions beginning at 7:15pm. More information about our training can be found here.
2.) Where do you meet?
We often meet at Tyne Amateur Rowing Club (TARC) for our club sessions - depending on the route or session that may be subject to change so it’s best to keep an eye on out the event details for location details.
3.) What pace groups do you have? Do I need to be fast to join?
We welcome all abilities and paces.
Our paced group runs range from 8 - 14 minute miles and cover distances from 5km to approx. 8 miles. More information can be found here.
We recommend runners can complete 5km in around 42 minutes. Don’t worry if you don't meet these guidelines currently, please do still contact us and we can support you to get there (e.g. via our C25K programme or attending coached sessions).
Our ethos is “Going Further Together” – this means nobody is left behind and you’ll always have someone to run with.
4.) What types of sessions do you offer?
You can find out more about our training and events here.
There is something for everyone. Racing is optional – many members purely run for the fitness and enjoyment.
5.) I’m totally new to running — can I still come along?
Absolutely! Beginners are always welcome, and our twice-yearly Couch to 5k (C25K) is perfect for anyone starting out.
6.) Can I try a session before joining? How do I sign up?
Yes — you can try our club for 6 weeks completely free, with zero pressure to join. This will give you a taste of our paced group runs and coach-led sessions, as well as providing you with a chance to meet our friendly members.
It’s natural to feel a bit nervous about attending. Our run leaders will provide you with a warm welcome and introduce you to our friendly members.
Click here for details of how to sign up for a trial.
7.) What should I bring to my first session? Do I need any special equipment?
We recommend wearing comfortable clothes and trainers.
To keep our members safe in winter, it is mandatory for runners to wear hi-vis clothing and a head or chest torch.
8.) What membership options do you have?
You can complete a free 6 week trial with us and then choose from two membership options:
- England Athletics (EA) Affiliated Membership - £49 per year. This includes England Athletics registration, race discounts and other benefits.
- Social Membership - £30 per year. This is aimed at those who want club support without EA affiliation.
More information about our membership options can be found here.
9.) Do you have qualified run leaders and coaches?
Yes, we have Leaders in Run Fitness (LiRFs) and Coaches in Run Fitness (CiRFs) who have undertaken specific training and assessments with England Athletics. You can meet the team here.
10.) Do you accept under-18s?
No, sorry – our membership is 18+ years old.
11.) Do you run a Couch to 5k (C25K) programme?
Yes — twice a year.
It’s friendly, structured, and perfect for absolute beginners or returning runners. More information can be found here.
12.) What’s the best way to keep up to date?
You can follow us on our socials and our NRC Strava group - details can be found here.
Our members and those on a trial with us also use an app called Spond – this is where we post a lot of our club communications and is also used for signing up to our sessions and events.
13.) Can I volunteer or get more involved?
Absolutely — we always welcome volunteers and future Leaders in Run Fitness (LiRF). Please get in touch via info@newburnrunningclub.co.uk.
