Training and Events

Training

Our club nights take place every Tuesday and Thursday at 7:15pm, alternating between:

1.) Paced runs (colour groups)

Our paced group runs follow the groups below, with up to 10 people per LiRF.

Whether you’re starting your first 5k, chasing a 10k PB, training for a Half Marathon or Marathon, or exploring Ultras — you’ll find a group that supports your goals.

2.) Structured, coach led sessions

These sessions can improve control, endurance and running form, which help you get closer to achieving your running goals and improve your overall fitness. Sessions are for everyone and can be tailored to your needs.

3.) All group training, tailored to different fitness levels

Team Orange come together as one group and run together.

Events

At Newburn Running Club, we believe running is more than just training — it’s about community, fun, achievement and shared experiences. Our events calendar offers something for everyone, whether you’re chasing a PB, exploring new routes, celebrating progress or simply enjoying time with fellow members.

Here’s a flavour what some of the things we get up to throughout the year:

Grand Prix Series

Our Grand Prix Series is a friendly, motivating club competition where members take part in selected local races across the year. Points are awarded based on participation and performance, with prizes and recognition at the end of the season.

The Grand Prix encourages friendly competition and personal improvement. It's also a great opportunity to try new races/routes and is all about celebrating achievements - whatever your pace of level of experience.

Cross Country – Start Fitness North East Harrier League (NEHL)

Running from September to March, the Start Fitness North East Harrier League (NEHL) is one of the most exciting and inclusive Cross Country (XC) leagues in the UK, and Newburn Running Club is proud to take part! It is open to all England Athletics (EA) Affiliated members, regardless of pace or experience.

The races are held in beautiful off-road locations featuring grass, mud, woodland and hills. With separate men’s and women’s races, and “packs” (slow, medium, fast) based on previous XC performances, it keeps races competitive and enjoyable for everyone - you don’t need to be fast, just willing to give it a go and get muddy!

Whether you're new to XC, a seasoned racer or part of our ‘cheer squad’, you’ll find it fun, friendly and hugely rewarding. There is always a warm welcome, buzzing atmosphere and plenty of encouragement from your team mates and fellow runners throughout the course. XC also helps to improve your running and boosts winter fitness – you’ll build strength, confidence, resilience and team spirit!

To participate, you will need:

  • Trail shoes (recommended, but normal road shoes can work on dry days)
  • Newburn Running Club race vest or t-shirt (which can be borrowed if needed)
  • Safety pins for your race number
  • Warm clothes for before & after

We set up our bright orange Newburn Running Club base at each fixture so everyone has a place to meet and somewhere to leave bags.

Progression Marker Runs

Our Progression Marker Runs are designed to help you track your development over the year.

These timed sessions are held at set points throughout the season and give you a clear benchmark of your fitness and improvements. They typically include: 1-mile, 5km and 10km.

The sessions are supportive, encouraging and a great way to see how far you’ve come.

Park Run Takeovers

Several times a year, Newburn Running Club fills the volunteer roster at a local parkrun — cheering runners, marshalling, pacing and supporting the community. Takeovers help us:

  • Give back to parkrun
  • Support new runners
  • Raise awareness of the club
  • Have a brilliant social morning

Members can volunteer, run, or just come along to cheer.

Summer Away Days

When the weather is warm and nights are lighted, we take our runs on tour with summer away days.

These special sessions explore scenic running spots across the North East — perfect for mixing things up and discovering new places. Popular away-day activities include:

  • Riverside runs
  • Woodland trails
  • Coastal routes

They’re relaxed, fun, and ideal for building friendships while enjoying a change of scenery.

Other Club Activities

Throughout the year, we also host:

  • Informal social runs
  • Social nights
  • Themed runs
  • Charity events
  • Group race trips
  • Cross country fixtures
  • Awards and celebration nights
  • Our Annual General Meeting

Every event reflects our ethos: Going Further Together.

If you have any questions about our events, please don't hesitate to contact a member of our committee or one of our run leaders.
