Safe Trails

Safety Guidelines

Bedfordshire Trail Runners adhere to the safety guidance issued by England Athletics to ensure a secure running experience for everyone. This advice is designed to prepare runners for various situations and to highlight behaviours that may cause harm or upset, even unintentionally.

Pre-Run Planning

  • Run in daylight: If running at night, stay on well-lit routes or use a head torch.
  • Inform someone: Let someone know your route and expected return time.
  • Familiarise yourself with the route: Knowing your path helps if you need assistance.
  • Download the What3Words app: Crucial for precise location sharing in emergencies.
  • Carry a hidden phone: But prioritise your safety over possessions.
  • Face traffic: Run on the side facing oncoming vehicles.
  • Share safe routes: But be cautious about sharing personal details online.
  • Vary your routine: Avoid always running the same route at the same time.
  • Consider headphone use: Bone conduction headphones allow you to hear your surroundings.
  • Run in company: Enjoy the safety and camaraderie of group runs.

Handling Negative Behaviours

  • Stay calm: Do not engage with harassers.
  • Seek help: Approach other people if feeling threatened.
  • Keep moving: Find a safer location and call for help.
  • Change direction: If followed, altering your path can reduce risk.

Reporting Incidents

  • Report to someone: Inform others to help prevent future issues.
  • Call 999: For immediate danger, otherwise contact the police on 101.
  • Notify private sites: Report harassment to the property owner if it occurs on private property.
  • Share with the group: Inform your running group to help others stay safe.

Running Ally Guidelines

  • Respect runners: Avoid shouting, using your horn, or making physical contact.
  • Share space: Allow runners room to pass safely.
  • Don’t join in: Uninvited participation can be intimidating.
  • Educate others: Encourage respectful behaviour towards runners.
  • Control dogs: Keep pets on a lead to prevent accidents.
