Trail Running Through Farmland: How to Respect Livestock and Stay Safe
At Bedfordshire Trail Runners, we’re lucky to explore some of the UK’s most beautiful countryside. But with open trails often comes shared space and that includes livestock like cows, sheep, and horses.
Whether you’re a seasoned runner or new to trails, understanding how to safely and respectfully pass through farmland is essential for your safety and the wellbeing of the animals (and your reputation with local farmers!).
Here’s how to keep it cool when cows are watching:
1. Slow down around animals
Don’t sprint through herds. Move steadily and calmly, it helps keep everyone relaxed.
2. Don’t get between mums and their young
Cows can get protective of calves, and horses can spook easily. Give them space.
3. Let them know you’re there
Speaking softly alerts livestock to your presence, sudden movements or silence can startle them.
4. Keep dogs under control
If you run with a dog, keep it on a lead near livestock. If animals become aggressive, release the lead so your dog can get away.
5. Stick to the trail
Marked rights of way exist for a reason. Respect land boundaries and don’t veer off course.
6. Always close gates behind you
Even if you found them open. Gates control animal movement, closing them protects both animals and landowners.
Respect the trail. Respect the land.
Running through fields is one of the joys of trail running – let’s make sure we all do it responsibly. Livestock aren’t the enemy; they just want a peaceful life (and maybe a chew on some grass).
Run wild, not reckless.
